Yep, the Phoenix film. Now that you mention it, I'd kinda like to see Midsommer again in its original language with English subs. One of my major gripes about Germany is how much they rely on dubbing. The NL is the exact opposite; and the further east one goes from the prime meridian, the wierder dubbing can get. I'm thinking the Czech Republic or Slovakia in the 80s and 90s. One person to voice all the parts in a film is a real weenie-shrinker!

Due to familiarity, the "creep" factor with German sailed for me a while ago, but it occasionally comes flooding back in certain situations, sometimes even when I speak or perform it. And I absolutely agree about one's cultural background influencing how any language is perecieved/received. For example, Nelson George's less-than-approving judgment about the suitability of German to achieve "flow" in rap music in his 2000 book Hip-Hop America was a major reason I turnd to German-language rap. But that's another story. :)

Incidentally, I saw Bruno Ganz in The Downfall (Der Untergang) in the cinema when it came out. Since I was in D-land at the time, there were no subs, which lends another dimension to "immersion" theory. When I watched it again with some family in the States a year or so later, they wanted to turn the sound down (cuz they had no access to the language) and just sit with the subs. But I was like, no way...crank that up...I wanna hear it!! We found a nice compromise. Peace
